Pampoenfontein Restio Cottage Pool

Pampoenfontein Restio Review – Stunningly Beautiful Getaway

I am so excited to share my Pampoenfontein Restio review with you!

In February we went away to Pampoenfontein and it was the ultimate restful getaway for my family. The weekend away was extra special because my parents, my mother in law and her partner joined us.

My husband first came across Pampoenfontein last year January and he showed me the Restio cottage which we both agreed was beautiful and we wanted to make a booking then, but life had something else in store for us which put a delay on travel plans for a few months. We decided to wait until it was hot again so that my kids could enjoy the beautiful pool on the stoep.

**Apologies for taking more than 6 months to publish my Pampoenfontein Restio Review – it has been an insanely busy year**

Pampoenfontein Restio Review

Pampoenfontein is a 400 hectare farm nestled in the mountains of the Groot Winterhoek area. There are walking paths through the fynbos so you can walk for a few kilometers from the farm to the beginning of the Groot Winterhoek Reserve.

Hundreds of years ago pumpkin (pampoen) seeds were dropped by nomadic herders when they camped at a fountain while crossing the mountain, hence the name Pampoenfontein.

There are a number of cottages at Pampoenfontein to choose from:

  • Restio
  • Heron House
  • Protea
  • Pelargonium
  • Lilly

Restio Cottage

Restio Cottage has a stone exterior but the inside is modern and comfortable.

It has 4 bedrooms that each sleep 2 people and 3 of the bedrooms have an en-suite which makes it very comfortable. I love having my own bathroom.

It is self catering and fully equipped with a fridge, electric oven, gas hob and microwave – it even has a dishwasher. Which is awesome but we decided not to make use of it. Bedding and towels are also provided.

There is an outdoor braai and a beautiful pool on the stoep.

For anyone that wants to stay connected there is uncapped internet – although we never tried to connect because when we go away we like to go screen free, especially me, since I am always working any chance I can get in between my mommy duties!

Our Experience At Restio Cottage

Pampoenfontein is a beautiful place. The drive to Pampoenfontein is beautiful but also quite hair raising! You have to drive along a very narrow road that twists and turns up the mountain, personally I loved it. It makes it feel so much more like an adventure when the road is exciting. That said I would not want to travel that road in a downpour.

Soon after arriving we had a staff member come and check that we were comfortable and settled in.

Restio Cottage is very comfortable, with everything we could possibly need. There is plenty of seating space for a family group including a big dining table indoors and another shaded dining room table outside on the stoep in front of the pool.

We spent most of our time on the stoep by the pool partly because the view sitting there was breathtaking, but also because my kids spent all day in the pool and neither one of them can swim properly yet so we had to keep a close eye on them with their floatable devices.

I don’t get to rest often since I am a work from home mommy, which means that when I am not in mommy mode, cooking, cleaning, shopping or running errands I am working online. When we go away is when I get to switch off and rest. I love going to out of the way places and I am always looking for quiet and peaceful. We love nature and getting away from it all, which was exactly what we got here.

When we arrived it was very hot and the entire weekend was scorching hot, reaching over 40 degrees Celcius on the Saturday. We managed to go for a quick walk on the Saturday morning but I was lazy and got up a little late which meant we didn’t get very far before we had to turn back.

A lovely touch to the cottage (and I assume every cottage has one) is a book that lists all the fauna and flora that you can find at Pampoenfontein so if you want to know what any flower, animal or insect is you can easily look it up.

Since we didn’t get around much due to the heat we didn’t get to see all that was on offer. We did watch a group of rock rabbits on a rock outcrop while we were sunning ourselves on the stoep.

We did manage to get a look at the communal pool which is beautiful. It is positioned next to a koppie surrounded by trees. There is also a dam that you can swim in or have a picnic at but it was quite low and we didn’t hang around because of the heat. It looks like a great spot for older kids but not very suitable for my two youngsters that can’t swim properly yet.

My Final Verdict – Pampoenfontein Restio Review

We loved this weekend getaway, it was a very special family weekend.

The cottage was comfortable and offered everything we needed. Pampoenfontein is beautiful and peaceful. The pool on our stoep was an absolute winner.

Just note that there is no railing around the stoep area and there is a drop next to the stairs and on the other side of the stoep by the braai there is also a drop. I would not advise going there with a crawling baby, toddler or even a young child under 4 or 5 years old due to the fact that they might fall.

One of the other cottages may be more suitable if your children are very young since the pool can also be a danger zone.

The only other recommendation I have is that if you want to take full advantage of the outdoor setting and go for walks don’t go in February. Rather go at a cooler time that is still warm enough to swim like November or December.

We are very keen to return to Pampoenfontein – our kids keep asking to go back.

  1. Wow… Such a beautiful place to visit. I wish I could go there someday..but really a good detailed review. You should also review these places at TripAdvisor inc. just a simple suggestion.

      Hi Samidha

Thanks, it was awesome! If ever you are in South Africa you really should spend some time here. It is so serene and beautiful.
And yes I usually do also add my reviews to Trip Advisor and to Google reviews. I can’t remember if I did it yet with this review but will make a note to add it.

Pampoenfontein resto  it sounds like a perfect place to go for a family holiday, however I do like your advice to go there at a cooler time of the year. I don’t like the idea of it being too hot especially if children are young and you have the worry of sunburn, having said that it sounds and looks like a very peaceful place to visit, the pool looks inviting and the local area looks interesting. Have you only been there once, what are the local restaurants like?

Our family love to walk so that looks good also. Thank you for doing the review on Pampoenfontein resto.

    1. Lynne Huysamen says:

We only went there the one time and it was lovely! Well it is not a place that is easily accessible so if you want to go to a restaurant you will need to drive a long way along a twisty, narrow mountain road. We never visited any restaurants. When we go away we like to be way out of the way and we take all our own food and just spend time as a family exploring the outdoors.

So I can’t recommend any local restaurants since we never left the cottage except on foot.

Thank you for putting up a review on this. I have never hear of the place pampoenfontein. I love travelling and like your I love adventures alot so yes I’ll consider checking out this place even though the sun might be a problem if really love to take a dip at that dam. Thanks for putting this up. What is the price range for the getawa

    1. Lynne Huysamen says:

It really was stunning Jackson and yes it was a scorcher but if you plan to hike and go to the dam for a swim then I would recommend going in November or December when it is warm but not scorching hot.

You can check their pricing at this link. There are different rates for each cottage, per person and also minimum rates so it would be best if you had a look at their website.

  4. Carol5162 says:

That view there is breathtaking. Who wouldn’t want such? My friends and I are planning an out of the country getaway and I think I just found one. I just checked the rates at Restio and I think they are quite good. I love that it can host up to 8 people, though we are six of us.

I also love the interior features. Thank you for sharing your experience. You review is so thorough that I feel I am holidaying already.

    1. Lynne Huysamen says:

The cottage was superb inside, unfortunately my photography skills are not great so I didn’t take many photos of the indoors.

The view was amazing, it has been a long time since I felt as rested as I did when I was there.

  5. Aabidah Ahmed says:

Pampoenfontein Restio looks like a real getaway place for a family. By what I’ve read, these cottages make you feel at home, with a braai area, a fridge, an electric oven, and many more things to let you feel at home.

It has an amazing view that looks peaceful from the image I can see. One thing that you mentioned is that it’s a great adventure driving there with the family. I love a fun adventure.

This place sounds like a trip worth going on so thank you for sharing.

    All the best.

    1. Lynne Huysamen says:

Yes it had everything we could possibly need to be comfortable and to make meals which is really important since we always choose self catering places for holidays. It is more cost effective and we like the family vibe rather than going out.

  6. rjkennedy says:

Traveling is so exciting, regardless of where you travel around the world. No matter if you are traveling with friends or family, it beats sitting at home and you can guarantee yourself a good time. Although I never heard of the farm it sounds peaceful. With all those acres, you have plenty of space to spread out. No need to worry about being cramped!

I’m getting more into international travel. I love it and love meeting people of different cultures. An enjoyable way to travel!

    1. Lynne Huysamen says:

That’s it, when you have kids you really want to go somewhere that they can run around and be safe. They really need the freedom to explore too!

  7. This place really looks amazing! I personally would love to be on an island… surrounded by sea. But as a family vacation, this looks perfect. My husband loves the outdoors, hiking, any activity, and my daughter just love to go anywhere (LOL). So definitely see me here (in pretty much the same position as you are) with my husband and daughter running around the mountains 🙂 Thank you for showing us this fantastic place.

    1. Lynne Huysamen says:

It’s a pleasure Karmen and yes it was quite the perfect destination for us! Such lovely memories. My kids are still asking us when we will go back.

  8. This place looks amazing! I’m definitely going to add it to my travel wish list for the next time we’re in that area.

    1. Lynne Huysamen says:

You will really love it Nicole! It is the ultimate in peace and tranquility!
