And it then has aways the same level as you have. i. E. your pet will level with you, no matter if you change it or not. You don't "level up" your pet. It'll get fixed stats with every level . (this even counts for skills)

In NWN they are used for critical hit immunity and the AC bonus, in NWN2 they are just used for the AC bonus since there are spells that grant critical hit immunity.
