At the timer CH is off, HW is on but both hot water and CH stay on (even with the room thermostat turned down to 10 degrees). The solenoid is responsible for switching the process from heating to cooling and vice versa. A broken solenoid is not going to be able to switch from one mode to the other, essentially causing your reversing valve to get stuck.
