WebHemoglobin S (HbS) polymerization is the root cause. of red blood cell (RBC) sickling in sickle cell disease (SCD) HbS molecules have a lower affinity for oxygen. When HbS releases oxygen, it can polymerize into long, rigid rods. These long, rigid rods deform the RBCs into sickled RBCs which, in turn, may contribute to other complications of SCD. WebMultiple-trauma patients are at increased risk for deep venous thrombosis (DVT) but are also at increased risk of bleeding, and the use of heparin may be contraindicated. Sequential pneumatic compression devices (SCDs) are an alternative for DVT prophylaxis. However, lower extremity fracture or soft tissue injury may preclude their use.
